Snowdonia Huts / Cottages

We sometimes make use of two cottages in Snowdonia, typically during Welsh 3000s events and similar. These are Cwm Glas Cottage in the Llanberis pass, and Helyg Cottage in Ogwen. The accommodation is "basic" - don't expect a luxury spa - yet they are ideally situated and provide easy access to the nearby mountains.

They are both steeped in climbing history and staying in them always feels like a real privilege.

Both cottages are owned by the Climber's Club, and although most of the club huts are only available to members and their guests, Cwm Glas and Helyg allow you book the entire cottage so that there is no clash of interests with club members. As the cottages are owned by the club, we have no control over their availability, however, we can confirm availability at the time of booking.

Both cottages have excellent facilities:

  • Fridge(s), Oven(s), Kettle(s), Microwave(s) etc
  • Utensils, Crockery, Cutlery etc
  • Toilets
  • Showers
  • Heater/fire
  • Sofa/seating area
  • Electricity
  • Dormitory style sleeping area

Cwm Glas

At £135 for the night, this beautiful cottage is ideally situated just below Crib Goch. Its recently refurbished toilet and shower block is probably the most luxurious in any club hut anywhere!

Cwm Glas can accommodate up to 9 people in two bedrooms (5 + 4).

During the 1940s, it was owned by the Vaynol Estate and used as a small hill dwelling for estate workers. The Climbers Club first leased the Cottage from the estate in 1947. The club finally bought the cottage in the 1970s for the grand sum of £250!

Helyg

In the heart of the Ogwen Valley not far from the base of Tryfan, this cottage was used by the pioneers of British climbing in the 1920’s. And later in 1953, it was used as a training base for early Everest expeditions.

Helyg can accommodate 11 people in a single bunk room. The cost per night is £195.
