A classic Snowdonia scramble and a must do for any aspiring mountaineer.
Driving through the Ogwen Valley, it is difficult not to look up at Tryfan in complete awe. Standing like a enormous trident which juts out of the ground and rising suddenly to 917.5m its serrated shape holds it in stark contrast to its rounder counterparts.
The scramble follows the impressive North Ridge which leads almost the full way from the car park to the summit and provides 500m of continuous scrambling which is almost unheard of the in the UK. It is a true mountaineering experience and many look back on this as the best day they've ever had in the mountains.
To the uninitiated the route is intimidating, sharp rocks, tall towers and stomach-churning drops - but once immersed in its embrace it feels surprisingly comfortable. The large hand-holds have been smoothed by years of footfall and feel cool and soft on the skin, the rock envelopes you and almost feels like a security blanket, and best of all, all of the difficulties can be avoided if only you know where to look.
Grade 1 (Easy Scrambling). Owing to the many possible route choices, with the help of a guide this is a great place to build confidence.
As it is 500m of continuous uphill, it does require a moderate level of fitness.
For those with plenty of energy left, it is possible to continue the route onto Bristly Ridge which is of a similar grade or to complete the full Bochlwyd Horseshoe for an unforgettable day out!
